Giannis Papatriantafyllou Quintet

Giannis Papatriantafyllou and his Quintet promise a unique jazz experience. He is one of the most important bassists on the jazz music scene and one of Thessaloniki's favourite musicians, and he will present his first personal record titled 'Absence'. It includes 10 original compositions and is a personal journey of emotional conflicts that arise from unforeseen changes and twists in the artist's existential quest through the imagery and sound of mainstream jazz.

The record will be presented by the Quintet which is made up of Giannis Triantafyllou (contrabass), Kostis Christodoulou (piano) Dimitris Tsakas (saxophone), Dimitris Angelakis (vibraphone), and Nikos Vargiamidis (percussion).

During his long career Giannis Papatriantafyllou has collaborated with many distinguished artists in Greece and abroad in concerts and recordings. Among them are Ralph Peterson, Jimmy Cobb, Alex Foster, Ron Afiff, Soweto Kinch, Abraham Wilson, Miles Grifith, Ray Santisi, Tony Remy, Takis Paterelis, George Kontrafouris, Dimitris Tsakas, Antonis Andreou, Dimitris Kalantzis, George Trantalidis, Alexandros Ktistakis, Giotis Samaras, Giannis Floros, Stratos Vougas, and others. His discography includes 'East Vision' (East Vision Group), 'Don’t be shy' (G.Kontrafouris Trio), 'Breaking loose' (S.Vougas Quartet), 'Tοο close' (G. Kontrafouris Trio), 'Let the blues talk' (T.Paterelis Quintet). This has been his exciting journey so far with some very worthy fellow travellers. However, the restless musician is not satisfied with being only a musician.

Giannis Papatriantafyllou –he himself has a contrabass degree from Takis Kapoyiannis' class and have studied jazz with Wayne Dockery, Ron Mc Clure, John Goldsby and Curtis Lundy- likes to keep in touch with  today's youth. He does this through his concerts and by having been a contrabass teacher for 25 years at the Modern Music Department of the Philippos Nakas Conservatory, where he continues to reveal the countless paths music has to offer to future musicians, with consideration and responsibility.
